Taipei, June 11 (CNA) Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) announced Thursday that Chen Yung-hsing (陳永興), former president of the Taiwan Association for Human Rights (TAHR), will be nominated as president of the Control Yuan.
President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) will nominate Chen to head the watchdog branch of the Taiwan government, and incumbent Control Yuan member Wang Jung-chang (王榮璋) as its vice president, Hsiao said at a news conference at the Presidential Office.
Chen, 75, headed the TAHR in the late 1980s before entering politics in the 1990s. He later served as a lawmaker from 1996 to 1999.
Long regarded as an advocate of Taiwan independence, Chen is also the founder of the local news outlet Taiwan People News.
Lai will also name 27 other nominees, including former legislator Liao Wan-ju (廖婉汝), to serve as Control Yuan members, Hsiao said.
In accordance with the Constitution, the nominees will have to be approved by the Legislature, which is currently controlled by the opposition parties.
The tenure of the incumbent Control Yuan members will expire on July 31, and their successors are expected to take office on Aug. 1, in accordance with the country's regulations.
Hsiao said Thursday that President Lai hopes to establish a people-oriented Control Yuan that ensures broad expertise across different fields to fully exercise the agency's oversight capabilities.
Furthermore, Lai hopes the Control Yuan will protect human rights with compassion, safeguard the interests of vulnerable groups, strengthen local connections, and listen to the public's needs, Hsiao said.
