Japan congratulates Tsai on presidential election victory

Japan's NHK News.

Tokyo, Jan. 16 (CNA) Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida on Saturday congratulated Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) on winning Taiwan's presidential election.

In the statement posted on his ministry's website, Kishida said Taiwan is an important partner and friend of Japan's and they share fundamental values, have close economic relations and engage in personnel exchanges.

Based on the stance of maintaining non-official and pragmatic relations with Taiwan, the Japanese government hopes the bilateral cooperation and exchanges can be deepened, Kishida said.

At an international news conference in Taipei after declaring victory in the election, Tsai said the sovereignty of the Diaoyutai Islands belongs to Taiwan.

Although Taiwan and Japan have sparred over the sovereignty of the group of uninhabited islands located northeast of Taiwan, Taiwan will continue to strengthen relations with Japan, she said.
