Taipei, Sept. 1 (CNA) Taiwan-based IC designer MediaTek Inc. said Monday that U.S. AI chip giant Nvidia Corp. has invested US$3.5 billion in its record US$3.9 billion overseas convertible bond offering.
MediaTek said the offering, the largest ever by a Taiwanese company, attracted participation from Nvidia, Google's parent company Alphabet, and international institutional investors.
As part of the expanded partnership, MediaTek said in a statement, it will adopt Nvidia's NVLink Fusion platform, allowing cloud service providers and AI developers to build custom AI chips that connect directly to Nvidia's AI computing systems.
According to MediaTek, the partnership will combine Nvidia's expertise in accelerated computing, AI software and graphics with MediaTek's strengths in custom chip design, high-performance and energy-efficient system-on-chip (SoC) development, advanced chip packaging and networking technologies.
MediaTek said its expanded collaboration with Nvidia will focus on three areas: AI infrastructure, edge AI, and AI-enabled platforms for software-defined vehicles.
In AI infrastructure, MediaTek will help customers develop custom AI chips and computing systems that integrate with Nvidia's rack-scale AI platform, the company said.
In edge AI, the companies will continue developing future generations of RTX Spark and DGX Spark chips, combining MediaTek-designed SoCs with Nvidia GPUs for AI-enabled personal computers, AI developer systems and enterprise workstations, it added.
