Taipei's sports head announces resignation (update)

2015/01/19 23:06:21

Taipei, Jan. 19 (CNA) Jongher Yang (楊忠和), the head of Taipei's Department of Sports, announced his resignation from the post after meeting with Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) Monday.

Yang became the first ranking official to resign from Ko's team since it was inaugurated on Dec. 25. The mayor respected Yang's decision, a Taipei spokesman said.

A local newspaper recently reported Yang's intention to resign, but he dismissed the speculation.

Ko said Sunday in an interview in Tainan that the sports department has been under a lot of pressure in preparing for the 2017 World University Games (Universiade), which Taipei will host, and building the athletes village.

The 63-year-old has served as a professor and as head of the Sports Affairs Council (which later became the Sports Administration under the Ministry of Education).
