Taipei, Dec. 29 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) met Guatemalan Vice President Juan Alfonso Fuentes Soria at the Presidential Office on Tuesday, reaffirming the solid and friendly relations between the two nations.

Taiwan and Guatemala have maintained cordial relations since the two nations established diplomatic ties in 1933, Ma said, describing the Central American nation as one of Taiwan's most faithful allies.

Ma also expressed his gratitude for Guatemala's support of Taiwan's bid to participate in international organizations, including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the International Civil Aviation Organization.

Meanwhile, Ma said that since assuming his current post in May, 2008, his administration has implemented a foreign aid policy in accordance with three principles -- seeking proper goals, acting lawfully, and exercising effective administration -- which has produced good results.

Ma cited the example of Dr. Chen Chao-lung (陳肇隆), superintendent of the Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, who has helped Guatemala establish a liver transplant center.

Heading a five-member delegation, Fuentes arrived in Taiwan Dec. 26 for a five-day visit. Over the past few days, the Guatemalan visitors have toured several important economic and cultural facilities in the country.

Fuentes and his delegation are scheduled to conclude their visit in Taiwan on Wednesday.
