Hung campaign to return money to donors

Taipei, Oct. 22 (CNA) Former Kuomintang presidential candidate Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱) said Thursday her campaign staff will return all of the NT$11.83 million (US$364,600) her campaign has received from 2,633 donors since Sept. 23.

The funds that her campaign received before Sept. 23 cannot be returned according to law and most of them had already been used, said her campaign office in a statement.

Hung, who was nominated by the ruling party on July 19, was stripped of her candidacy during a special party congress on Sept. 17.

The following day, her campaign office closed its online donation account and on Sept. 19 informed the bank to stop accepting new donations.

As there has been no precedent of a party's presidential nominee being replaced, responsible government agencies and banking institutions did not know how to deal with the donated funds, according to the statement.

After carrying out research and seeking opinions, Hung and her staff decided to return the money based on an article of the campaign funding act which stipulates that donated funds can be returned to donors within one month.

However, only donors that can be identified will get a refund and anonymous donors and those who made donations prior to Sept. 22 won't be able to receive any.
