Taipei, Nov. 16 (CNA) Upstart Mexico came from behind Monday to upset previously undefeated Canada and earn a spot in the World Baseball Softball Federation (WBSF) Premier 12 semifinals.

Mexico, which barely squeezed into the final eight after finishing fourth in its six-team preliminary Group B, will face the United States in the tournament's semifinals in Tokyo on Nov. 19.

Canada which led Group A with a 5-0 record in preliminary group plan, seemed destined to advance in the game being played in Taichung, nursing a 3-1 lead in the top of the eighth inning.

But Canadian shortshop Sean Jamieson made an error with the bases loaded, giving Mexico its game-tying and go-ahead runs.

The three-run rally gave Mexico the win and put it into the semifinals in a major world baseball championship for the first time since 1965.

In another quarterfinal showdown, U.S. starter Zack Segovia, a former pitcher for Taiwan's President Lions, allowed only one run in his first 5 innings against the Netherlands to lead his team to a 6-1 win and a semifinal appearance in Tokyo.

In the other two quarterfinal contests, Japan defeated Puerto Rico 9-3 and South Korea downed Cuba 7-2. As the only undefeated team, Japan will face Korea again in the Tokyo semifinals. Japan shot down Korea 5-0 in the premier's opening round in Hokkaido Nov. 8.
