Taichung, Sept. 8 (CNA) A man was arrested in Taichung early Tuesday after allegedly hitting a nurse with his car, making a U-turn, and striking her again, before fleeing the scene, local authorities said. The nurse later died.

The man, surnamed Lin (林), was tracked down and arrested by police, who said they would refer the case to prosecutors on charges of homicide and hit-and-run and recommend that he be detained.

The Taichung Police Bureau's First Precinct said Tuesday that it received a report of the incident at 1:10 a.m. The nurse, surnamed Chen (陳), was taken to a hospital, where efforts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead.

Police said their investigation showed that Lin struck Chen as she was crossing the street at a crosswalk. He allegedly did not stop, but instead made a U-turn and struck her again before driving off.

Lin was later tracked down and arrested. He tested negative for alcohol and drugs, police said. Meanwhile, Chen's body has been sent for an autopsy.
