Northeasterly wind system to bring rain from Wednesday: CWA

Taipei, Sept. 7 (CNA) This autumn's first northeasterly wind system will pass over Taiwan from Wednesday through Friday, bringing scattered rain showers to much of the country, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said Monday.

CWA forecaster Wang Pin-hsiang (王品翔) told CNA Taiwan would continue to enjoy mostly cloudy to clear weather on Tuesday, with the exception of possible localized showers in some mountainous and coastal areas.

From Wednesday through Thursday, however, the arrival of a northeasterly wind system will bring scattered showers to the east and areas above Taoyuan in the north, Wang said.

During that period, there will also be a chance of brief, scattered showers in the south and mountainous areas, while nighttime and early morning temperatures in windward areas of the system -- meaning the northeast -- will become slightly cooler, Wang said.

On Friday, increased atmospheric moisture will bring a chance of heavy rains in Keelung and along the north coast, as well as in Yilan and Hualien, Wang said.

While the wind system is forecast to weaken on Saturday, moist air from the south is expected to move northward, bringing rain to a wide swathe of the country, according to the CWA.

On Saturday and Sunday, scattered rain showers are forecast for Greater Taipei and the east of Taiwan, while isolated showers are possible in the south, Wang said.

Throughout this week, slightly cooler overnight and early morning temperatures are forecast for Taiwan, with lows ranging from 22-25 degrees Celsius nationwide.

Daytime highs, meanwhile, will rise to 30-33 degrees in the western half of the country, and 28-30 degrees in the east, Wang said.
