No let-up in the rain in southern Taiwan on Wednesday: CWA

Taipei, Sept. 2 (CNA) Taitung County in southeastern Taiwan will continue to face "widespread and persistent" showers or thunderstorms Wednesday, while southern Taiwan and Hualien County in the east will see localized heavy rain, the Central Weather Administration has forecast.

The weather agency also predicted a high chance of some rain across all of Taiwan on Wednesday, attributing the moisture-laden air to a low-pressure system and the outer circulation of Tropical Storm Saudel.

The CWA advised people to take rain gear with them if heading outdoors and warned those headed to mountainous areas to beware of landslides, falling rocks and sudden rises in river levels after days of rain.

In terms of temperatures Wednesday, the CWA forecast highs of 28-30 degrees Celsius in central and southern Taiwan and the Hualien-Taitung area and of 31-33 degrees in northern Taiwan and Yilan County.

The weather across Taiwan will remain hot and humid when it is not raining, the agency said.

Meanwhile, the CWA issued "yellow-light" strong wind advisories for Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung County and Taitung County, as well as the outlying Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu islands.

Winds in those areas are likely to reach Level 6 (38-49 kph) or stronger or gusts of Level 8 (62-74 kph) or stronger on the Beaufort scale.

Under the yellow alert, people should beware of trees, unsecured structures or objects being blown down or dislodged by strong winds, and outdoor workers should take precautions, the CWA said.

As of 8 a.m. Wednesday, Saudel was located about 420 kilometers west of Taiwan's southernmost point, Cape Eluanbi, and was moving northeast at 6 kilometers per hour.
