Taipei, July 14 (CNA) A 43-year-old American national who teaches at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) was arrested Tuesday afternoon after allegedly stabbing his brother-in-law to death at a musical instrument store in Hsinchu City.

The Hsinchu City Police Bureau said in a statement that officers from the Second Precinct received a report at 2:46 p.m. that a man surnamed Lin (林) was attacking someone with a knife at a musical instrument store on Sanmin Road.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the store owner, surnamed Chi (紀), lying in a pool of blood.

According to police, Lin was still holding the knife when they arrived, and he repeatedly confronted the officers. Police also found 10 people -- six adults and four children -- inside the store who were unable to leave because of the incident.

The officers at the scene used legally authorized force to subdue Lin after he refused to surrender, according to police. Four shots were fired, striking Lin in the leg, and he was then taken to a hospital under police custody.

After medical personnel entered the store, Chi was found to have no vital signs and was later pronounced dead.

Chi's body was sent to a funeral home for an autopsy ordered by prosecutors. The results were not immediately available.

A source in Hsinchu City told CNA that Lin is a professor in NYCU's Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering, specializing in semiconductor engineering and electronic components.

Lin, who was originally from Taiwan but is now a U.S. citizen, is married to the sister of Chi's wife, the source said.

Police said they have launched an investigation to determine the motive for the killing and establish the full circumstances of the case.

In response, NYCU said it would cooperate fully with prosecutors and police in their investigation.
