Taipei, Oct. 26 (CNA) Northern Taiwan can expect more rain and cooler temperatures this week, with the mercury dropping to lows of 18 degrees Celsius, as another wave of northeasterly winds sweeps across the country, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said Sunday.

The current northeasterly winds will continue to affect Taiwan through Wednesday, with precipitation peaking on Tuesday, bringing increased rainfall to windward areas, CWA forecaster Liu Pei-teng (劉沛滕) told CNA.

That weather system will weaken slightly on Thursday before another, stronger wave arrives on Friday, lasting into the following week, Liu said.

From Monday through to Wednesday, northern Taiwan can expect cool, wet weather, with lows of around 22-23 degrees in most areas, and 20-21 degrees in low-lying and coastal areas, Liu said. Daytime highs are forecast to reach 23-25 degrees, he said.

On Thursday, temperatures in the north may briefly rebound to a high of around 28 degrees, with a chance of sunshine on the western side of the Taipei metropolitan area.

When the second wave of northeasterly winds arrives on Friday, temperatures will fall gradually to lows of around 20 degrees on Sunday and possibly 18-19 degrees next week, Liu said.

Meanwhile, rain will continue mainly in the windward areas of the region throughout the week, with heavy showers likely on the north coast of Keelung, in mountainous areas of Greater Taipei, and in Yilan County, he forecast.

On Tuesday, a northeasterly monsoon will bring rain to northern and eastern Taiwan, thunderstorms in mountainous areas, and possible scattered showers in central parts of the country, Liu said.

With the arrival of the next surge of northeasterly winds on Friday, more rain can be expected and in northern and eastern Taiwan, and some afternoon thunderstorms in central and southern regions, he said.
