Taipei, Oct. 5 (CNA) Taiwan on Wednesday reported 54,929 new COVID-19 cases, the first time the daily number exceeded 50,000 since late June, and 48 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

Wednesday's new cases were up 13 percent from a week earlier and extended to 10 the numbers of days in which case numbers posted week-on-week increases, Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Director-General Chou Jih-haw (周志浩) said at a press briefing.

The number of cases reported in a single day had not been this high since June 22, when 52,246 new cases were reported, according to CECC data.

Deputy Health Minister Victor Wang (王必勝), who also heads the CECC, said at the press briefing that the increase showed that the current wave of infections was peaking and could rise further.

With the newly reported 48 deaths, the number of COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 11,280 since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the CECC.
