Taipei, Oct. 3 (CNA) A search and rescue mission to find two divers who went missing in waters off Kenting in Pingtung County on Wednesday was still in progress, the coast guard said Thursday.

At around 11 a.m. Wednesday, the coast guard said, it received a report that three people who had gone diving in waters off Maobitou in Kenting at 8:55 a.m. Wednesday had not returned.

According to the boat captain who had carried them there, the divers were supposed to return to the boat at 10 a.m. that day, the coast guard said.

Diving instructor Yang Cheng-chia (楊政佳), one of the three people, was picked up 10 hours later at around 7 p.m. Wednesday by a local fishing boat some nine nautical miles southeast of Maobitou, the coast guard said.

Yang told his rescuers that he and the other two divers had surfaced 10 minutes after they went into the water, but boat that had carried them out to sea was nowhere in sight.

He said the three of them tried to swim ashore together but got separated because of a strong current.

Yang said he did his best to just stay afloat and let the current carry him where it would.

As of 6 p.m. Thursday, search and rescue teams were still trying to find the other two divers, one of whom was a Chinese national, according to the coast guard.
