Missing bridge collapse fishermen identified as Filipino, Indonesian

Taipei, Oct. 1 (CNA) Six missing fishermen believed to be trapped under a collapsed bridge in Yilan County Tuesday are believed to be Indonesian and Filipino workers, according to their manpower agency.

When the bridge above the entry to the port of Nanfang'ao suddenly ruptured and collapsed, it crushed three fishing boats.

Tseng Yen-pu (曾彥博), a representative of Sang Yi International Co., Ltd. manpower agency, said the six missing fishermen are from his manpower agency.

"We have checked hospital records, asked boat owners and also colleagues of the missing workers and we believe the missing workers are the six from our agency," Tseng said.

Wu Chih-hung (吳志宏), Yilan's Labor Affairs Department director-general, also confirmed the information.

The owner of the boats in the incident has five vessels and employs a total of 23 migrant fishermen, Wu said.

Rescue workers were still searching the area for the missing fishermen as of press time.
