Taipei, Aug. 10 (CNA) The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) has issued extreme heavy rain warnings for mountainous areas in central and southern Taiwan Saturday due to southwesterly air currents induced by Typhoon Lekima.

Extreme heavy rainfall is likely in mountainous areas in Taichung, Nantou, Chiayi, Kaohsiung and Pingtung, forecasters said.

Heavy rainfall is also expected in low-lying areas in Kaohsiung, Pingtung and Taitung, and mountainous areas in Hsinchu, Miaoli, Yunlin, Tainan and Hualien, said the bureau, which warned against mudslides, falling rocks and flooding.

Under the bureau's definition, heavy rain means accumulated rainfall of 80 millimeters or more within 24 hours or rainfall of 40 mm or more in an hour, while extreme heavy rain is defined as accumulated rainfall of 200 mm or more within 24 hours.

The bureau lifted sea warnings for Typhoon Lekima on Saturday morning as it was making landfall in China.

As of 2 p.m. Saturday, Lekima was packing maximum sustained winds of 118 kph, with gusts of up to 154 kph.

With a radius of 180 km, the storm was located about 140 kilometers southwest of Shanghai, moving at a speed of 11 kph in a north-northeasterly direction, according to bureau data.

Despite residual rainfall brought by the typhoon still affecting Taiwan, the CWB also forecast temperatures of up to 38 degrees Celsius in eastern Taiwan and 37 degrees in northern Taiwan for Saturday.

As of 1 p.m. Saturday, the recorded highs for the day in Taiwan were 38.0 degrees in Hualien County, 37.7 degrees in Taitung County, and 37.6 degrees in Taipei, and 37.3 degrees in New Taipei.
