Taipei, Sept. 1 (CNA) The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) said Monday it has partnered with the National Palace Museum (NPM) to launch an exhibit featuring 48 classic artworks reimagined through AI-generated visuals.

Cheng Jen-chieh (鄭仁傑), general director of ITRI's Service Systems Technology Center, said the collaboration highlights both the creative potential of generative AI and its integration with cultural heritage.

The museum curated the works and incorporated AI into the storytelling, he said, with the goal of creating a dialogue between history and the present rather than simply animating paintings.

ITRI said it used a proprietary video generation and optimization technology to transform the 48 works -- including pieces by Taiwanese masters Chen Cheng-po (陳澄波) and Kuo Hsueh-hu (郭雪湖) -- into dynamic visuals.

The in-house system employs a super-resolution algorithm to enhance image quality, enabling delicate brushstrokes and paint textures to be faithfully reproduced in 8K.

The institute said the new approach offers visitors an immersive, interactive experience that blends art and technology.

The exhibit will not be open to the public and be held internally at the ITRI on Sept. 15, to celebrate the institute's anniversary.
