Taipei, Aug. 29 (CNA) Taiwan's new envoy to the European Union and Belgium, Shieh Jhy-wey (謝志偉), has pledged to fully dedicate himself to his new role.

"Entrusted with the president's order, I will, as always, give my utmost," said Shieh, who had served as Taiwan's de facto ambassador to Germany for nine years until Aug. 1, in a social media post Thursday.

Looking back on his years of service in Berlin, Shieh said he and his team at the Taipei Representative Office had worked to deepen understanding within German society that Taiwan's security was important to both sides, given their shared values, cultural exchanges and technological cooperation.

His comments came shortly after a presidential decree confirming his new assignment was released.

Shieh, 70, holds a doctorate in German literature from Ruhr University Bochum in Germany.

He was first appointed as Taiwan's representative to Germany in May 2005, serving for two years, before resuming the post from 2016 to 2025.

Prior to his posting to Germany, Shieh had headed the now-disbanded Government Information Office under the Executive Yuan.

Shieh's last position will reportedly be filled by incumbent Taiwanese representative to Sweden Gu Ruey-sheng (谷瑞生).
