Taipei, June 22 (CNA) A United States Coast Guard ship transited through the Taiwan Strait on Thursday, Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND) said.

The ship was carrying out a freedom of navigation mission and was sailing through the strait in a northerly direction, coming from the south, the MND said.

The Republic of China (Taiwan) military was closely monitoring the surrounding waters and airspace during the ship's transit and detected no abnormal activities, the ministry said.

The American Coast Guard vessel made the transit one day after a Chinese naval fleet, led by the Shandong aircraft carrier, sailed through the waterway, which prompted the MND to deploy an "appropriate amount" of military assets in response.
