Taipei, Sept. 5 (CNA) A campaign rally for opposition Kuomintang (KMT) presidential candidate Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) scheduled for Sept. 8 is "vitally important" for his presidential bid, a member of his campaign team said Thursday, as the Han voter base faces the risk of division.

The rally will be held at Sweet Ripples Park in New Taipei, Han's campaign team announced Thursday in a statement.

Former President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九), KMT Chairman Wu Den-yih (吳敦義) and other political heavyweights will attend the rally, the statement said.

Hsu Shu-hua (許淑華), a KMT legislator and Han's deputy campaign manager for northern Taiwan, said in a radio interview Thursday that "the upcoming rally is vitally important to us."

She said the crowd is expected to number around 100,000 but expressed hope that the number could be double that, so the public can see that Han's supporters "have not left him."

Recent opinion polls conducted by several survey companies have shown Han's popularity on a downward slope.

Also, the possible presidential bid of tycoon Terry Gou (郭台銘), who was defeated by Han in the KMT presidential primary in July, has added to concerns that votes of the pan-blue camp will be split, should Gou decide to run as an independent, as Gou is aligned with the pan-blue camp.

Han held five campaign rallies ahead of the KMT primary, the last of which was on July 8 and his camp is now hoping to demonstrate the unity and vigor of his supporters with the upcoming rally, Hsu said.
