Taiwan movie 'The Sadness' wins best film at Brazilian film festival
São Paulo, May 13 (CNA) Taiwanese film "The Sadness (哭悲)" has won best film and best special effects at the 18th International Fantastic Film Festival of Porto Alegre, an annual fantasy film celebration held in the Brazilian city.
The film was written and directed by Canadian filmmaker Rob Jabbaz as his feature film directorial debut. Jabbaz lives in Taiwan and the actors, crew and funding for the movie all came from Taiwan.
The film was released in 2021 as a horror film in Taiwan, and premiered internationally at the 74th Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland in August the same year.
It was then screened at the 25th Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, Canada, followed by the United States at the Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas.
To commemorate the film winning two awards at the 18th International Fantastic Film Festival of Porto Alegre, the festival's organizers invited Chang Tsung-che (張崇哲), head of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Brazil, to record a congratulatory message to the crew of "The Sadness" and three other featured Taiwanese films.
In his message, Chang encouraged all film loving professionals in the industry to continue creating good films with breakthrough creativity, so that the world can see what Taiwan has to bring to the table.
He also added that he looks forward to seeing more Taiwanese films being distributed in Brazil.
Known popularly as "Fantaspoa," the festival has been the main film event in Porto Alegre since its inception in 2005.
This year's event held from April 14 to May 1, was the first physical film festival in two years, as the 2020 and 2021 events were held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 18th edition of the festival screened a total of 188 fantasy and sci-fi films from all over the world, four of which came from Taiwan.
The three other Taiwanese films were "Bird" (鳥), "Part Forever" (永別) and "Life in a Box" (恐怖娃娃機).
