New brand names for Carrefour Taiwan unveiled as retailer exits market

Taipei, June 30 (CNA) Carrefour Taiwan's outlets will be rebranded under new ownership on Wednesday, marking the French retailer's formal exit from Taiwan's market, the chain's new parent company announced Tuesday.

According to Uni-President Enterprises Corp., Carrefour hypermarkets will be renamed Prosperity Plaza (萬家福), while Carrefour supermarkets will operate under the name Uni-Prosperity (樂家康).

The company told CNA that under the terms of its licensing agreement and relevant regulations, it was only allowed to use the Carrefour brand through Tuesday.

Uni-President Group acquired full ownership of Carrefour Taiwan in 2022 after buying the 60 percent stake held by French retailer Carrefour. It announced plans late last year to retire the Carrefour brand.

Industry analysts said the name change reflects continued consolidation in Taiwan's hypermarket sector. Following the rebranding, Costco will be the only foreign-owned hypermarket operator remaining in Taiwan.

The market is now dominated by domestic retailers, including Prosperity Plaza, PX Mart, which completed its integration of RT-Mart under the Mega PX Mart brand in 2025, and A.mart, operated by Far Eastern Group.

Despite the consolidation, Taiwan's hypermarket sector continues to contract, with Carrefour closing four hypermarkets just last year.

At the same time, Mega PX Mart's Zhonglun store in Taipei, operated by the Ruentex Group, is scheduled to close after Sept. 13 due to long-term losses, and A.mart closed its Zhongxiao store in Taipei last September.

Uni-President Enterprises Corp. Chairman Lo Chih-hsien (羅智先) has attributed the trend to demographic changes, including the growing number of single-person households, which has reduced demand for large-format stores.

Bucking the trend, Costco continues to expand. Its Kaohsiung store, which has operated for nearly 30 years, is scheduled to relocate on July 3 to a larger site in the city's Cianjhen District. The new outlet will be Costco's largest store in Taiwan.
