Taipei, Dec. 1 (CNA) A fire broke out in the mountainous area of Alishan on Monday and spread over more than five hectares of land, but it did not affect the area's valuable wood resources.

Firefighters in Chiayi County reported that a forest area near Tapang No. 3 Bridge in the mountainous region reported a fire at around 1 p.m. When they arrived at the scene, firefighters found scattered blazes and heavy smoke billowing from mountain cliffs.

According to Liao Yi-kuang, the director of the Chiayi Forest District Office, there has been no rain in the area for months, leaving the ground dry and vulnerable to fire. The cliffs at the scene also made firefighting more difficult.

Liao said that although the fire had yet to be brought under control as of 5:30 p.m, it had been confined to a specific area and will not spread further.

Construction officials said they had closed a section of the Alishan Highway from the 66 kilometer to 77 kilometer markers and will consider whether to reopen it Tuesday morning.
