Taipei, Sept. 26 (CNA) Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) sent an official letter of congratulation to German Chancellor Angela Merkel after she secured a fourth term in office, following a big win for her center-right CDU/CSU coalition in the national election for a new federal parliament on Sunday.

Tsai also thanked Germany for supporting Taiwan's efforts to join international organizations, including public remarks at the World Health Assembly this year regretting that Taiwan was unable to attend the event.

The letter was delivered on behalf of the Republic of China (Taiwan) government and people, the Presidential Office said in a statement Tuesday.

In the letter, Tsai noted that Germany has long been Taiwan's largest trade partner in Europe and Taiwan is Germany's fifth largest business partner in Asia. The two countries also maintain close ties in the fields of academic study, technology, culture and education, she said.

President Tsai said with efforts on both sides, she hopes Taiwan will be able to make even more positive contributions to the international community in the future.
