Underprivileged students to get sponsorship for exchange program

Taipei, Dec. 26 (CNA) The Miaoli County government will provide sponsorship for less privileged students at a Miaoli County school to participate in an exchange program with a sister school in Japan, the Ministry of Education (MOE) said Monday.

Five students and two teachers each from Houlong Elementary School in Miaoli County in northwestern Taiwan and Nakaminami Elementary School in Japan's Fukuoka Prefecture will take part annually in the exchange program, the MOE said.

Less privileged students in the Taiwan school will be given priority and the government will pay their airfare, the ministry said.

The participants will stay with host families in order to gain a deeper understanding of the local culture, according to the MOE.

The two schools formally forged sistership ties in mid-December after some students from the Miaoli school took part in the Asian-Pacific Children's Convention in Fukuoka in July in a two-week exchange.

Chang Kuo-en, principal of the Taiwanese school, said the students managed to communicate with their counterparts from other countries in Mandarin Chinese, English and Japanese and formed close links with their host families.

Some of the students have stayed in touch with the Japanese host families by writing to them in English, Chang said.
