New York, Aug. 2 (CNA) Teng Kai-wei (鄧愷威) took the mound in New York on Saturday as the starting pitcher for the San Francisco Giants in his 2025 MLB season debut against the Mets.
Teng pitched 3.1 innings on Saturday and gave up five points.
The Taiwanese pitcher first allowed three runs in the bottom of the first, after giving the Met's Pete Alonso his 250th career home run, a three-run shot.
However, Teng was not fazed by the loss and soon found his footing, holding the Mets scoreless in the bottom of the second and third innings.
Additionally, with Mets pitcher Kodai Senga of Japan making a few mistakes, the Giants led the game 4-3 against the Mets after the top of the fourth.
But in the bottom of the inning, Teng was unable to maintain the momentum and allowed the Mets to reach first and second bases via fouls and stolen bases.
While he was relieved by Matt Gage in the same inning, the two Mets batters Teng had sent to the bases still scored, bringing Teng's total allowed runs to five and the game score to 4-5 in favor of the Mets.
The Giants subsequently scored two more runs in the top of the final inning, but it was not enough to catch up to the seven runs the Mets were able to secure between the bottom of the sixth, seventh and eight.
The game on Saturday ended after the top of the ninth, with the Mets snapping a four-game losing streak to emerge victorious 12-6.
Speaking with the press after, Teng said he was not at his best in the bottom of the first.
He said he was able to get back on track later and throw his pitches more effectively, starting in the bottom of the second.
The team's manager Bob Melvin said that while the Giants lost, he would not rule out the possibility of Teng starting for the team again.
