Taipei street dance contest registration opens with NT$1.38m purse

Taipei, June 20 (CNA) Registration for the 2022 Metro Street Dance Competition opened on Monday, giving contestants a chance to win prizes totaling NT$1.38 million (US$46,429) in cash, according to the organizers, the Taipei Rapid Transit Corp. (Taipei Metro).

The registration will run until 9 p.m. on Aug. 12 and allows competitors to register either in the Youth division for those aged 12-18 or the Adult division for those 19 and older. Each dancer can only register to compete in one division, according to Taipei Metro.

Each team must consist of between three to 12 dancers, excluding staff or choreographers, while dancers must not be signed to any agents or agencies, according to Taipei Metro.

All registration must be done online on the Metro 17th Street Dance website and is not limited to those with a national identification card number. International residents without a national identification card number who want to sign up for the contest can submit their passport or resident certificate numbers, Taipei Metro told CNA.

The champions of each division will win a cash prize of NT$160,000, while all first and second runners-up will win NT$100,000 and NT$50,000, respectively, according to Taipei Metro.

Aside from the top three teams, there are also three NT$20,000 Merit awards and four NT$2,500 Qualifier awards up for grabs, according to Taipei Metro.

The preliminary round will be held Aug. 27-28 at Section 1, Daan Road, between Zhongxiao East Road and Civic Boulevard in Taipei, while the finals will be held on Sept. 24 at Jazz Square in the city's Zhongshan Metro Mall.

In addition, there will also be a two-on-two BBoy battle contest with auditions, pre-quarterfinal, quarterfinal, semifinal, and final rounds all to be held on Sept. 24 at Jazz Square, according to Taipei Metro. Registration for this is also on the Metro 17th Street Dance website.

The champion team will win NT$60,000, while the first runner-up and second runner-up will win NT$30,000 and NT$10,000, respectively. There are also three Merit and four Qualifier awards of NT$20,000 and NT$2,500 each, according to Taipei Metro.
