Taiwan-Czech duo advances to second round at French Open
Taipei, Oct. 1 (CNA) Taiwanese tennis star Hsieh Su-wei (謝淑薇) and her Czech partner Barbora Strycova got off to a good start Thursday at the French Open, scoring a win in the opening round of the women's doubles.
After walking away with a doubles title at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia tennis tournament in Rome last month, the pair beat Maria Sanchez of the United States and Astra Sharma of Australia in two straight sets Thursday.
Hsieh and Strycova had a strong start, losing only one game, before finishing the first set 6-1. They continued their dominance in the second set, ending 6-4, in a match that lasted 69 minutes at Stade Roland-Garros in Paris.
In the next round of the competition, Hsieh and Strycova will take on Czech Marie Bouzkova and Dutch Arantxa Rus.
The French Open is the premier clay court tennis championship tournament in the world and the second of four annual Grand Slam tournaments, the other three being the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.
The French Open tournament is being held Sept. 21 to Oct. 11.
