Seasonal winds bring rain to northern, eastern Taiwan: CWA

Taipei, Sept. 9 (CNA) Seasonal northeasterly winds will bring localized showers to eastern Taiwan and areas north of Taoyuan on Wednesday and Thursday but other parts of Taiwan will see cloudy to sunny skies, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said Wednesday.

Temperatures over the two days will range from 21 to 30 degrees Celsius in northern Taiwan, 22 to 32 degrees in central Taiwan and 22 to 28 degrees in the south, the CWA forecast.

The lowest temperature recorded in a low-lying area on Wednesday morning around Taiwan was 18.5 degrees Celsius in Guanxi Township, Hsinchu County, followed by 19.3 degrees in Xihu Township, Miaoli County, according to the CWA.

The CWA issued strong wind advisories for coastal areas from Miaoli County to Yunlin County, as well as the outlying islands of Matsu, Penghu and Green Island, through Wednesday night. It warned that winds could exceed 40 kilometers per hour (kph), with gusts exceeding 63 kph.

On Friday, heavier rainfall is expected in Yilan and Hualien counties and along Taiwan's north coast, while rainfall will also increase in Taitung County, areas north of Taoyuan, and the Matsu islands.

Other parts of Taiwan will remain mostly cloudy to sunny, with afternoon showers possible, the CWA said.

Over the weekend, the seasonal northeasterly winds will weaken, with localized showers possible in the Greater Taipei area and eastern Taiwan. Other parts of the island will remain mainly cloudy, with afternoon showers possible, according to the CWA.

However, a tropical depression moving through the South China Sea may bring scattered showers to southern Taiwan.

The CWA cautioned that the depression's projected path remains uncertain, and it asked the public to pay attention to the latest forecasts.
