
Taipei, July 7 (CNA) The eye of Typhoon Danas made landfall in Chiayi County's Budai Township in southwestern Taiwan at 11:40 p.m. Sunday, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).
As of 12 a.m. Monday, the eye of the typhoon was located 30 kilometers west southwest of Chiayi and was moving in a northeasterly direction at a speed of 25 kilometers per hour (kph), CWA data showed.
The typhoon was packing maximum sustained winds of 144 kph, with gusts of up to 180 kph, according to CWA data.
The typhoon's storm circle has already enveloped Penghu, areas south of Miaoli, as well as Nantou, Taitung and Hualien counties, posing a threat to all of Taiwan and the Penghu Islands, the CWA said.
Wind and rain continue to batter southern Taiwan and Penghu, while central Taiwan is also experiencing increasing wind and rainfall, it said.
As of 10 p.m. Sunday, 28 people had been reported injured, while 2,853 had been evacuated to safety, according to the Central Emergency Operation Center (CEOC).
Meanwhile, 85,113 households experienced power outages due to the typhoon. As of the latest update, electricity had been restored to 36,442 of these households, while 48,671 remained without power, according to CEOC figures.
