Cold snap brings snow to mountains in Taiwan
Taipei, Jan. 25 (CNA) Several mountainous areas in northern and northeastern Taiwan saw snowfall late Tuesday and early Wednesday as a powerful cold front brought freezing temperatures to high-altitude parts of the country.
According to the Taitung Forest District Office, snow fell on Xiangyang Mountain, which sits 3,603 meters above sea level, in Taitung County in eastern Taiwan early Wednesday morning, lasting for about one hour until 5:30 a.m.
A combination of snow flurries and soft hail was also reported in the Mingchi Forest Recreation Area at an altitude of about 1,200 meters in northeast Yilan County around 6 a.m. on Wednesday when the mercury tumbled to minus 2 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, the Directorate General of Highways said that motorists traveling on the Northern Cross-Island Highway (Provincial Highway No. 7) near Mingchi Villa should watch out for heavy fog as it could affect visibility.
In Hsinchu County, the owner of the Green Wood restaurant, which sits around 1,450 meters above sea level in Jianshi Township, on Tuesday posted images of snowy scenes outside the eatery on social media.
The restaurant owner said that temperatures had reached zero degrees at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, with snow beginning to fall around 7 p.m.
