CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports 15,651 new COVID-19 cases, 53 deaths

Taipei, Dec. 1 (CNA) Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) reported 15,651 new COVID-19 infections Thursday, all but 56 were domestically transmitted, and 53 deaths from the disease.

The new cases represented a 4.4 percent drop from a week earlier, CECC data showed.

The deceased ranged in age from their 30s to their 90s. All but two had underlying health conditions, while 27 had not received any doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, the CECC said.

Also on Thursday, the CECC reported 86 new COVID-19 cases classified as moderate and 36 as severe, including one case of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) that involved a 3-year-old boy with two vaccine jabs who had no health conditions.

The boy was discharged from hospital after responding positively to treatment, the CECC said.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei reported the highest number of new cases with 2,568, followed by Taichung with 1,999 and Kaohsiung with 1,962.

Taoyuan recorded 1,715 cases, Taipei 1,279, Tainan 1,258, Changhua County 956, Hsinchu City 532, Hsinchu County 524, Pingtung County 496, Miaoli County 443 and Yunlin County 344.

Chiayi County had 270 cases, Nantou County 255, Yilan County 231, Hualien County 211, Keelung 182, Chiayi City 164, Taitung County 108, Kinmen County 65, Penghu County 31 and the Matsu Islands two, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 8,329,008 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 37,772 classified as imported.

With the 53 deaths reported Thursday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 14,387.
