CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports seven new COVID-19 cases, third Delta variant death
Taipei, Sept. 22 (CNA) Taiwan on Wednesday recorded seven new COVID-19 cases and one death from the disease, the third fatality in the country caused by the Delta variant of the coronavirus, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
Only one of the seven new cases was transmitted domestically, the CECC said.
The patient, a New Taipei resident in her 30s, was placed in quarantine on Sept. 7, after two of her family members were confirmed as infected with COVID-19, CECC official Lo Yi-chun (羅一鈞) said at a press briefing.
She tested positive for COVID-19 prior to finishing quarantine, though she has currently reported no symptoms, Lo said.
Test results for the three patients in the family cluster indicate they contracted the disease a while ago, and are unrelated to another recent cluster in New Taipei involving the Delta variant, Lo said.
Meanwhile, the six imported cases involved five Taiwanese nationals and an American national who traveled to Taiwan from the United States, Cambodia, the United Kingdom and Myanmar.
The sole death reported Wednesday is a Taiwanese man in his 50s. He returned to Taiwan from Vietnam on Aug. 6 and developed a fever and sore throat during quarantine before testing positive for the disease on Aug. 18.
The man suffered from severe pneumonia while receiving treatment in hospital and passed away on Sept. 20. He is the third fatality in Taiwan caused by the Delta variant of the coronavirus, Lo said.
To date, Taiwan has confirmed a total of 16,159 COVID-19 cases, of which 14,414 are domestic infections reported since May 15, when the country first recorded more than 100 cases in a single day.
The number of confirmed COVID-19 deaths in the country has risen to 841, with all but 12 recorded since May 15, CECC data showed.
