CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan records 17 new COVID-19 cases, receives new AZ vaccine delivery
Taipei, July 27 (CNA) Taiwan on Tuesday reported 17 new COVID-19 infections, and took delivery of 582,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
A total of 16 domestic cases were reported in northern Taiwan -- six in Taoyuan, five in Taipei, four in New Taipei and one in Hsinchu County -- said Health Minister Chen Shih-chung (陳時中), who heads the CECC, at its daily briefing.
The 16 people who developed symptoms between July 14 and July 26, consisted of 11 men and five women in their 30s to 60s, with seven testing positive during home isolation or at the end of home quarantine.
Four of the 16 domestic cases have an unknown source, and one is still being investigated, Chen said.
The one case contracted overseas involved a Taiwanese teenage boy who returned to Taiwan from the United States on July 25, Chen said.
Meanwhile, there was one fatality, a man in his 70s, who had a chronic illness, Chen said, adding that the man experienced difficulty breathing on May 28 and died on July 24.
The new cases reported on Tuesday brought the total in the country to 15,599, of which 14,124 are domestic infections reported since May 15, when Taiwan first recorded more than 100 COVID-19 cases in a single day.
To date, 787 people have died of COVID-19 in Taiwan, including 775 since May 15.
Also on Tuesday, the fourth batch of 10 million AZ vaccine doses Taiwan has purchased from the manufacturer arrived in the country at around 3 p.m.
The latest shipment from Bangkok brought the total delivery of AZ vaccine doses Taiwan has purchased to 1.88 million, the CECC said.
