Taipei, Jan. 7 (CNA) A light aircraft crashed in Pingtung County, southern Taiwan Thursday, with two reported fatalities, according to the county's Bureau of Fire and Emergency Services.

The wreckage and bodies were found in a mountainous area in the county's Sandimen Township at around 10:20 p.m., the bureau said.

The aircraft, which took off at around 2 p.m. from Pingtung's Gaoshu Township with a trainer and one passenger onboard, was supposed to return at 3:30 p.m. after reaching Shanchuan Glass Suspension Bridge in Sandimen, the bureau said.

A search effort was launched when the plane did not return at the scheduled time and could not be contacted, it added.
