Taoyuan airport listed among world's 50 biggest
Taipei, Jan. 6 (CNA) Arrivals at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport hit a new high in 2018, giving it a ranking among the 50 largest airports in the world, the management company said Sunday.
The number of arrivals at Taiwan's largest airport increased by an annual 3.69 percent in 2018 to 46.53 million, Taoyuan International Airport Corporation said, citing statistics from the National Immigration Agency.
With that increase, the airport gained a place on the list of the world's 50 largest airports with a handling capability of at least 40 million travelers in 2018, the corporation said.
It attributed the growth in arrivals to the government's New Southbound Policy and the increasing popularity of budget airlines.
In 2018, arrivals from the countries listed in the policy -- 18 countries in Southeast and South Asia, including the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, as well as Australia and New Zealand -- increased by an annual 9.84 percent, or 1.01 million, it said.
Arrivals from China rose 1.91 percent to over 2.7 million in 2018, while budget airlines helped bring in 910,000 more visitors to Taiwan, which was a 12.05 percent annual increase, the corporation said.
