Foreign coach returning from Brazil tests negative for Zika

Taipei, Sept. 1 (CNA) A foreign coach who fell ill after returning from Brazil has tested negative for the Zika virus and dengue fever, health authorities said Thursday.

The 32-year-old Korean national who lives in Kaohsiung was a member of Taiwan's delegation to the 2016 Olympic Games last month in Rio de Janeiro.

On Aug. 28, he developed symptoms such as fever and diarrhea, two days after he returned from Rio, according to Kaohsiung's Department of Health.

He was hospitalized Aug. 31 and reported as a suspected case of Zika virus or dengue fever, the department said.

Yang Yu-wen (楊玉玟), a spokeswoman for the Centers for Disease Control, said the results of the blood tests indicated that the patient was not infected with either virus.
