Tsai Ing-wen to run for president as DPP's candidate

Taipei, April 15 (CNA) Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) formally declared her candidacy for the 2016 presidential race on Wednesday after receiving her party's nomination and called for solidarity and strength to change the nation.

"Today is an important day and I am honored to accept the DPP's nomination to take part in the Republic of China's next presidential election on behalf of the DPP," she said at a news conference.

Tsai's nomination was approved by the party's Central Executive Committee members to a round of applause shortly before the news conference.

Tsai was later set to issue a statement which will be streamed online on Youtube.
