Ex-Taipei Deputy Mayor Huang retires from electoral politics

Taipei, Sept. 3 (CNA) Former Taipei Deputy Mayor Huang Shan-shan (黃珊珊), a senior figure in the opposition Taiwan People's Party (TPP), said Thursday that she would not run for office again.

In a Facebook post, Huang, who most recently served as a TPP legislator, said she had entered nine elections since she was 28, including six Taipei City Council races, two legislative elections and one Taipei mayoral race. She also recalled campaigning multiple times for presidential and legislative candidates.

Huang revealed she had decided not to seek a sixth term on the Taipei City Council after falling ill in 2015, resolving at the time to live for herself and her family from then on.

However, she realized that her responsibilities were not yet complete and continued on her political path for another 10 years.

Huang said she had now completed her mission, having done her best and having no regrets.

She said her goal in politics had always been to "build a better Taiwan for the next generation." Although she will no longer seek elected office, she said she remains concerned about public affairs and will continue to participate in them in a different capacity.

Huang added that she would no longer have to weigh the value of her actions against their potential impact on an election.

She said she planned to return to the career she enjoys, learn new things and continue pursuing her dreams. She also said she would write about her experiences and thoughts, stand up for what she believes is right, speak out against what is wrong and do her best in whatever position she takes.

Huang won all six of her Taipei City Council races, serving in the role for more than twenty years, before becoming deputy mayor under TPP founder Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) in 2019. She resigned in 2022 to run for Taipei mayor.

In 2024, Huang was the first candidate on the TPP's party-list legislative slate. She left the Legislature in 2026 after serving for two years, in accordance with the party's policy of rotating its party-list lawmakers every two years.
