Taipei, June. 19 (CNA) Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND) confirmed Wednesday that a Canadian warship recently sailed through the Taiwan Strait, a rare move by a non-U.S. military vessel through the waterway that separates Taiwan and China.

The ministry did not provide any additional information on the transit, including exactly when the passage was made, except to say that Taiwan's military was fully aware of the situation and that it was Canada's freedom of navigation.

According to local media reports, the transit took place on Tuesday.

The U.S. has for months sent warships through the strait to demonstrate its commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific, but non-U.S. military vessels have rarely made similar moves, to avoid angering Beijing.

A French warship, identified as the frigate Vendemiaire, passed through the Taiwan Strait April 6 in a rare passage by a European vessel.
