U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State David Meale visits Taiwan
Taipei, April 9 (CNA) U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State David Meale arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday to attend a series of events to mark the 40th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act (TRA).
On Wednesday, Meale will speak at the annual Hsieh Nien Fan banquet, which will be hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Taipei and at which President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) is also scheduled to speak.
During his one-week visit, Meale will also open a joint U.S.-Taiwan workshop on stopping digital piracy and protecting trade secrets and will hold discussions with Taiwan authorities on a range of issues related to the U.S.' relationship with Taiwan, according to a press release issued by the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT).
Meale is scheduled to attend a series of commemorative events for the 40th anniversary of the TRA, which serves as the basis of unofficial relations between Taiwan and the U.S. in the absence of official diplomatic ties.
Taiwan's foreign ministry welcomed Meale's visit, saying in a statement that Washington's decision to send another senior U.S. official to attend the annual Hsieh Nien Fan banquet in Taipei highlights the importance of the bilateral relations.
Alex Wong (黃之瀚), deputy assistant secretary in the U.S. State Department's Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, attended the banquet last year, as did President Tsai.
According to the AIT, Meale assumed his current post as deputy assistant secretary for trade policy negotiations in State Department's Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs in December 2018.
He was previously the director for sanctions policy and implementation. Meale, who joined the Foreign Service in 1992, holds the rank of minister-counselor and has served in positions in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Guinea, and Washington.
