Paraguayan president thanks Taiwan for educational assistance
Taipei, Oct. 8 (CNA) Paraguayan President Mario Abdo Benitez on Monday expressed gratitude for the assistance Taiwan has provided his country, especially the establishment of the Taiwan-Paraguay Polytechnic University (Universidad Politechnica Taiwan-Paraguay, UPTP).
Abdo Benitez expressed great confidence in the project, saying he believes the UPTP will help put Paraguay on the map for science and technology around the world.
The project was jointly initiated by Taiwan and Paraguay in December last year, with funding for the school's construction coming from Paraguay, while National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST) will provide teachers, curriculum plans and lab equipment.
Speaking at a ceremony where he received an honorary doctorate degree from Taipei-based NTUST, Abdo Benitez said he was honored to receive such a recognition and thanked the school for providing instructors to the UPTP.
The Paraguayan president also pledged to deepen Paraguay-Taiwan friendship based on shared democratic values.
During a meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) at the Presidential Office earlier in the day, Abdo Benitez noted that his father, Mario Abdo Benitez Sr., witnessed the establishment of formal ties between the two countries 61 years ago, when he served as private secretary to former Paraguayan President Alfredo Stroessner.
Meanwhile, NTUST President Liao Ching-jong (廖慶榮) said he hopes to see the UPTP become the best science and technology university in Central and South America.
The honorary degree was bestowed in recognition of Abdo Benitez's forward-thinking vision as well as his friendship with the Republic of China (Taiwan), Liao said.
According to a NTUST press release, the UPTP is scheduled to officially open in Asuncion in March 2019.
