Foreign students allowed to take teacher certification exams
Taipei, Dec. 14 (CNA) Foreign students will be allowed to take Taiwan's teacher certification exam for the first time in 2019, with all applicants now required to pass the exam before undertaking an internship, according to the Ministry of Education (MOE) Friday.
The MOE released information on the 2019 certification exams for teachers at kindergartens, elementary schools, junior and senior high schools on Friday. This included the announcement that for the first time international and overseas Chinese students will be allowed to sit the exam if they first pass a pre-service teacher education program.
Meanwhile, applicants now have to pass the exam before starting a teaching internship, a rule introduced in August to boost the exam pass rate, according to Director General Cheng Yuan-chuan (鄭淵全) of the Department of Teacher Training and Art Education.
Cheng added that the old rule required applicants to finish the internship first, but many found teaching uninteresting and did not take the certification exam, ensuring a pass rate of about 60 percent.
The ministry said the two exams next year, scheduled for March 9 and June 1, 2019, will accept candidates under both the old and new rules.
