Hot weather with occasional showers forecast for Taiwan

Taipei, June 16 (CNA) Cloudy to sunny skies are forecast for most areas of Taiwan on Sunday, with a high chance of occasional showers in southern and eastern parts of the island, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

Meanwhile, hot weather is expected to prevail around Taiwan, with daytime highs forecast to hit 32-33 degrees Celsius for western Taiwan, and 29-30 degrees for the eastern parts, according to the bureau.

Afternoon showers are likely in most mountainous areas and some flat areas of southern Taiwan on Sunday, the bureau added.

Wu Der-rong (吳德榮), an adjunct associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University, said the weather around Taiwan will be largely stable on Sunday, with many parts exposed to high levels of ultraviolet radiation around noon.

With residual air moisture from a stationary front in the Bashi Channel moving northerly, temperatures around Taiwan will remain high on Monday, with a chance of sporadic showers, particularly in the afternoon, Wu said.

On Tuesday, under the influence of the stationary front, cloudy to sunny skies are expected for most areas of Taiwan, with brief showers forecast for central and southern parts of the island.

From Wednesday to Saturday, due to the stationary front hovering in waters off northern Taiwan, hot and sunny weather will prevail over Taiwan, with daytime highs in many areas to hit over 35 degrees during that period, while there is a chance of intermittent showers in early morning hours in central and southern parts of the country.

However, due to the lack of wind to disperse atmospheric pollutants, the air quality was poor in some parts of Taiwan on Sunday, the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) said.

As of noon, the EPA's Air Quality Index (AQI) was flashing an "orange alert" in 11 monitoring stations in central and southern Taiwan as well as the offshore county of Kinmen, indicating unhealthy levels for sensitive groups, according to the EPA.
