Foehn winds forecast for southeastern Taiwan

Taipei, June 25 (CNA) Afternoon thunderstorms could ease off across Taiwan Friday due to a strengthening Pacific high pressure system, while southeastern parts of the country might experience Foehn winds -- hot and dry gusts that can send the mercury soaring, according to the Central Weather Bureau.

More stable weather is likely for most parts of Taiwan, forecasters said, adding that while the chance of thunderstorms remains, they are not likely to be as intense and as long as the one the country experienced earlier in the week.

The Foehn winds, which descend the sheltered side of mountains into valleys and can often send temperatures over 36 degrees Celsius, could affect southeastern Taiwan through June 29, the bureau said.

The mercury in southeastern Taiwan's Dawu Township rose to 38.7 degrees Celsius last week under a similar weather pattern, setting the highest reading in Taiwan this year, the bureau said.
