Taipei, Nov. 24 (CNA) Premier Lai Ching-te (賴清德) announced Saturday night that he has offered to resign to shoulder responsibility for the Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) crushing defeat in the local government elections and apologized for the result.

In a Facebook post, Lai said the election result was a reflection of the public's dissatisfaction with the government's performance, leading him to tender his verbal resignation to President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文).

The DPP suffered a major defeat in Saturday's polls, losing Taichung and Kaohsiung, two of the four big cities it currently controls, and one smaller city and four counties to the opposition Kuomintang (KMT).

Tsai said at a press conference that she did not approve Lai's resignation, and instead asked him to stay on as premier to ensure the continuity of the government's policies and initiatives.
