Taipei, March 8 (CNA) Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) is expected to be the party's candidate in the Tainan mayoral election later this year, having won the primary against five other hopefuls, according to a statement released Thursday by the DPP.

The DPP primary took the form of a series of public opinion polls that was conducted via telephone over the past three days to choose the party's candidates for the November municipality elections.

In all three polls, the party said, Huang emerged as the winner, scoring at least twice as many points as the other five competitors, lawmakers Yeh Yi-jin (葉宜津), Wang Ting-yu (王定宇) and Chen Ting-fei (陳亭妃), former Tainan Deputy Mayor Yen Chun-tso (顏純左), and former DPP deputy secretary-general Lee Chun-yi (李俊毅).

Based on the results of the polls, Huang is expected to be named on March 14 as the DPP candidate for the Tainan mayoral election.

The ruling party is expected to also announce its candidates for the Kaohsiung and Chiayi mayoral races, namely Legislator Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) and former deputy Minister of Agriculture Weng Chang-liang (翁章梁), respectively.

In the opposition camp, meanwhile, the Kuomintang (KMT) said it is trying to figure out how best to conduct its primary now that an independent, former Tainan police commissioner Chen Tzu-ching (陳子敬), has agreed to run on the party's ticket.

Chen Tzu-ching thinks that there should be two rounds of polling in the KMT primary, with a runoff between the party's first two candidates and final round between him and the first-round winner, according to Lee Che-hua (李哲華), director of the party's Organizational Development Committee.

Lee said he respects the opinions of Chen Tzu-ching and the other two hopefuls but has not yet decided on a format for the Tainan primary.

The other two hopefuls in that race are former KMT lawmaker Kao Su-po (高思博) and former president of the National University of Tainan Huang Hsiu-shuang (黃秀霜).
