Taipei, March 18 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) announced Saturday the official opening of a branch of her presidential office in the central city of Taichung, as part of the government's plan to balance regional development and strengthen the role of central Taiwan.

The office is located in Taichung City government's Yangming building in Fengyuan District. Tsai said that the office will be staffed and used to hold meetings with politicians and guests in central Taiwan.

Tsai said that the central government will have closer cooperation with local governments and the establishment of the branch office is the "beginning to a stronger role to be played by central Taiwan" in national development.

She made the announcement during a meeting in Taichung with officials and representatives from central Taiwan's Changhua, Nantou and Miaoli counties as well as from neighboring Taichung City. The three counties and Taichung City have a combined population of 5.11 million.

The establishment of the central branch came after the inauguration of a similar office in southern Taiwan's Kaohsiung City on March 10. It was part of Tsai's campaign to balance the country's perceived north-south divide.

The move was aimed at bringing balance to the economic, cultural and political developments between Taiwan's northern and southern regions, Tsai said during the inauguration reception then.
