Taipei, Dec. 3 (CNA) The Legislative Yuan on Tuesday confirmed Chang Po-ya as the head of the Central Election Commission, allowing her to remain on the job.

Chang was confirmed as CEC chairwoman by a 65-42 vote that followed party lines, with majority Kuomintang lawmakers backing her and minority Democratic Progressive Party lawmakers voting against her.

The 71-year-old Chang is a seasoned politician who has previously served as Chiayi mayor, legislator, health minister and interior minister.

She took over as head of the election commission in 2010 after the incumbent, Rai Hau-min, was confirmed as president of the Judicial Yuan.

In addition to Chang, Chang's deputy Liu Yi-chou and four other CEC members -- Liu Tsung-de, Pan Wei-ta, Chen Kuo-hsiang and Chang Kuei-mei -- were also confirmed by the Legislature in votes that followed party lines.

According to the Organic Law of the Central Election Commission, the chairman, vice chairman and members of the organization are nominated by the Executive Yuan and confirmed by the Legislative Yuan for four-year terms. They can be re-appointed once.
