Taipei, Jan. 31 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou on Tuesday officially named Vice Premier Sean Chen the next premier after the Cabinet led by Vice President-elect Wu Den-yih resigned en masse earlier in the day.

Ma said in a press release that Chen had helped the nation through the 2008 global financial crisis with his expertise and experience in the fields of finance and law, as well as in the public and private sectors.

In addition, Chen's solid track record included involvement in cross-Taiwan Strait financial memorandums of understanding, the opening up of the domestic market to Chinese banks and the stabilization of Taiwan shares, Ma noted.

The president said he believed Chen would continue to demonstrate his expertise and deal properly with the potential economic downturn the European debt crisis might bring.
